10 Tips for Care Partners to People Living with Parkinson\u2019s<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Be positive! Advice from those who have been there is not to focus on \u201cWhy me? Why us?\u201d but rather \u201cLet\u2019s deal with it.\u201d<\/li>\n
  2. Accept change. Accepting and adapting one\u2019s life is important.<\/li>\n
  3. Do the things you always said you wanted to do. Whether it\u2019s hiking, mountain biking, or seeing the world, now is the time to do it.<\/li>\n
  4. Take time for yourself. See friends and continue those activities you most enjoy.<\/li>\n
  5. Encourage the person with Parkinson\u2019s to maintain his\/her independence. Know when\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0to help.<\/li>\n
  6. Allow extra time when planning an outing. It will reduce stress for everyone.<\/li>\n
  7. Live each day. Everyone\u2019s experience with Parkinson\u2019s is different.<\/li>\n
  8. Address financial and legal issues early.<\/li>\n
  9. Accompany the person with Parkinson\u2019s to appointments (medical, physiotherapy) and ensure all their questions are answered.<\/li>\n
  10. Learn all you can about Parkinson\u2019s.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Care Partners to People Living with Parkinson\u2019s: Taking Action<\/strong>
    \n(reprinted from\u00a0Parkinson Post<\/a>, Winter 2007, Volume 7, Number 3)<\/p>\n

    Parkinson\u2019s is a family disease; one that takes a team of involved and supportive loved ones to help an individual with Parkinson\u2019s thrive. In most cases however, the bulk of responsibility lies with one main care partner \u2013 a spouse, a child, or a friend. For this individual, life is changed forever when their loved one is diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s and they must take on many new roles. Theirs is a demanding job involving compromise, encouragement and strength. Their focus is on providing emotional and physical support to their loved one, advocating on their behalf, and learning all that they can about Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n

    Lessons Learned<\/strong>
    \nOver and over care partners report similar experiences about the challenges they face in helping their loved ones. Because of the progressive nature of Parkinson\u2019s, a care partner is challenged to know what degree of support their loved one needs at any given time. It is important that a person with Parkinson\u2019s is able to speak for themselves and manage their own life for as long as possible; however, the care partner is a key member of the team. The relationship is sometimes described as one that begins as \u201cpartner\u201d and evolves into \u201ccare provider\u201d.<\/p>\n

    Here are a few practical steps for care partners to follow:<\/em><\/p>\n

    1. Be an active member of the team:<\/strong>\u00a0attend medical appointments and be involved in every decision about your loved one\u2019s care. Research shows that people with actively involved care partners tend to do better.<\/li>\n
    2. Ask questions until you understand the answer:<\/strong>\u00a0Parkinson\u2019s is a complex, neurodegenerative disorder and as such, there is a lot to understand. Don\u2019t hesitate to ask questions until you feel comfortable that both you and your loved one understand the answer fully \u2013 this includes information about medication (what it\u2019s for, side effects, when to take, things to avoid).<\/li>\n
    3. Keep your loved one honest:<\/strong>\u00a0people tend to leave out important pieces of information when speaking with their doctor\/neurologist either due to embarrassment or they simply think it doesn\u2019t matter. It is very important that care partners encourage their loved ones to tell their doctor everything including symptoms, changes in behaviour, other medications or supplements.<\/li>\n
    4. Speak up for your loved one:<\/strong>\u00a0sometimes people with Parkinson\u2019s simply can not communicate for themselves so care partners must speak up for them.<\/li>\n
    5. Know what hospitals and\/or care facilities have expertise with Parkinson\u2019s disease:<\/strong>\u00a0lack of Parkinson\u2019s education is the primary complaint that Canadians with Parkinson\u2019s and their care partners have about health care professionals coast-to-coast. If you have the opportunity, choose a facility that understands how to best care for someone with Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/li>\n
    6. Get to know the nurses:<\/strong>\u00a0whether in hospital, a care facility or at the movement disorder clinic, get to know the nurses that will be caring for your loved one. If necessary, explain the importance of administering medications on-time and act as a Parkinson\u2019s resource for them \u2013 your efforts will not only benefit your loved one, but every person with Parkinson\u2019s who needs care in the future.<\/li>\n
    7. Take the opportunity to educate:<\/strong>\u00a0whether in a hospital, walking down the street or sitting in a restaurant, chances are that some aspect of Parkinson\u2019s will draw the attention of others to your loved one. Make the most of the situation by explaining what is happening and letting others know how they can help.<\/li>\n
    8. Become an expert about supports & services:<\/strong>\u00a0find out what kind of support is available in your community and what the criteria for qualification are (home care, disability, CPP, tax credits).<\/li>\n
    9. Befriend another care partner:<\/strong>\u00a0having someone who understands your situation can be invaluable. Over 240 Parkinson support groups operate coast-to-coast \u2013 simply contact your Parkinson Canada\u00a0local office<\/a>\u00a0to find the group best suited to you.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
