Researchers who study Parkinson\u2019s disease have long known that dopamine-producing cells in a region of the brain called the substantia nigra are central to the reason why people develop this degenerative illness.<\/p>\n

When dopamine-producing cells die, their death affects the body\u2019s ability to control movement. But some people also have other symptoms, including a decline in their judgment and reasoning ability, freezing in place, and other walking difficulties that lead some researchers to suspect the diagnosis of Parkinson\u2019s is actually being applied to a group of different, though related, conditions.<\/p>\n

At Laval University, Professor Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Calon thinks it\u2019s time to take another look at the substantia nigra.<\/p>\n

Much of the research used to develop treatments for Parkinson\u2019s, such as levodopa medication, was based on studies of tissue samples collected 50 years ago.<\/p>\n

Using current knowledge about the role of genes and proteins in contributing to Parkinson\u2019s disease, Calon will correlate samples of brain tissue from people who had Parkinson\u2019s with the case studies that described the symptoms of their illnesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s surprising is there have not been that many studies focused on the substantia nigra of people who died with Parkinson\u2019s disease,\u201d says Calon. \u201cWe think that looking directly in the brain \u2026 can lead to developing new treatments.\u201d<\/p>\n

Calon hopes to find structural changes in the substantia nigra that will point to differences in the subtypes of Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cBased on what we learn, perhaps we can develop new treatments or new ways to prevent the progression of the disease,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Calon, a biochemist and a pharmacist, thinks he may find differences in the substantia nigra of people who had gait problems, such as freezing episodes, compared to the substantia nigra of people who experienced more stiffness, and tremors, for example.<\/p>\n

Calon\u2019s work is possible because of a collection of brain samples, known as a brain safety deposit, that Drs. Ali and Alex Rajput have collected alongside histories of their patients in Saskatchewan. \u201cIt\u2019s really a pan-Canadian collaboration,\u201d Calon says.<\/p>\n

Calon, who works closely with the Parkinson\u2019s community in Quebec, is motivated by the experiences of the people with Parkinson\u2019s whom he meets.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have confidence that it\u2019s possible to improve the treatment of Parkinson\u2019s disease,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
