The Movement Disorders Clinic at Toronto\u2019s
\nUniversity Health Network is among the top clinics in the world for treating
\nParkinson\u2019s disease. During her fellowship there, Dr. Sarah Lidstone will study
\nways to improve treatment for people living with Parkinson\u2019s, including studying
\ninnovative models of care in Europe and the UK. Funded by Pedaling for
\nParkinson\u2019s in honour of Dr. Peter George Morse, her hope is to build a patient-centered
\nnetwork of allied health professionals focused on Parkinson\u2019s disease that
\ntreat the whole patient.  <\/p>\n

The Movement Disorders Clinic at Toronto Western Hospital is a global leader in treating Parkinson\u2019s disease. That\u2019s why Dr. Sarah Lidstone is eager to learn from the colleagues who will mentor her there.  <\/p>\n

Lidstone, a neurologist, has been studying Parkinson\u2019s disease for
\n18 years, including as a researcher before she earned her medical degree. <\/p>\n

The most important thing she\u2019s learned is that Parkinson\u2019s \u201c… is not just a movement disorder,\u201d she says. \u201cPeople\u2019s whole lives are affected.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although people often think Parkinson\u2019s affects seniors, people
\nwith early onset Parkinson\u2019s disease are in their 30s or 40s when diagnosed.
\nThe disease affects their careers as well as the lives of their caregivers, and
\nalters family dynamics.<\/p>\n

During her fellowship, Lidstone plans to learn from her supervisor,
\nDr. Anthony Lang, about how to build a successful clinic. She hopes to add
\ninnovative technological tools to care for people with Parkinson\u2019s in all
\naspects of their lives. Her research is made possible through a Clinical
\nFellowship for $50,000 over 1 year from Parkinson Canada Research Program funded
\nby Pedaling for Parkinson\u2019s in honour of Dr. Peter George Morse.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe technology exists to monitor people\u2019s tremors, for example.
\nWhy are we not using it clinically?\u201d she asks. <\/p>\n

Although the Toronto Western Hospital clinic is cutting-edge, it\u2019s
\nnot always accessible to people outside the city. After her fellowship,
\nLidstone plans to create a network of healthcare professionals, including
\nsocial workers, nurses, physiotherapists and speech-language pathologists. They
\nwould be trained at the clinic, but specialize in treating Parkinson\u2019s in their
\nhome communities. <\/p>\n

She plans to travel to The Netherlands, to Scotland and to the
\nUnited States to study the multidisciplinary networks there.  <\/p>\n

Ultimately, Lidstone hopes a multidisciplinary approach will
\nensure people with Parkinson\u2019s get the care they need for all aspects of the
\ndisease.  <\/p>\n

\u201cMy vision is to become a world leader in truly innovative ways of
\ntreating patients with Parkinson\u2019s disease. This includes actively involving a
\nphysiotherapist early in the disease course, involving a social worker, and
\nplacing a huge emphasis on teaching patients about their disease. This can
\nempower patients,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n

Lidstone has been interested in Parkinson\u2019s disease since her
\nundergraduate days, when she became fascinated by how changes in the brain
\ncorrespond to people\u2019s symptoms. <\/p>\n

She forms close relationships with her patients. <\/p>\n

\u201cHaving an opportunity to ask people questions about all these
\ndifferent parts of their lives and do something to help them in all of these
\nareas is very rewarding,\u201d Lidstone says.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s these long-term patient relationships that I love and make
\nme want to come to work every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lidstone also hopes to study existing care versus multidisciplinary care to see which provides better outcomes. <\/p>\n
