\u201cI wish you could meet my wife, Margot. We\u2019ve been married for 34 years and\u2014I
\nknow I\u2019m biased\u2014she\u2019s the most wonderful woman I\u2019ve ever met.\u201d<\/p>\n

John Parkhurst knows all too well what
\nit means to be a care partner. His wife, Margot Bartlett, has lived with Parkinson\u2019s for over
\n30 years. As a registered nurse, Margot thought she may have Parkinson\u2019s. Still,
\nthe day they heard the diagnosis was gut-wrenching. It felt like a loss that
\ncould never be replaced. Margot was just 42 then. Their daughter was only four
\nyears old.<\/p>\n

Parkinson\u2019s doesn\u2019t just affect the
\nperson diagnosed; it changes the lives of all those around them\u2014spouses,
\nchildren, friends, and their caregivers.<\/p>\n

Margot is the kind of person who\u2019d get up bright and early, work all day as a
\nRegistered Nurse, then teach piano until 9 or 10 at night. Her energy was
\nboundless!<\/p>\n

But as her Parkinson\u2019s progressed it took
\nall of that away \u00ad\u2013 and more.<\/p>\n

John became her primary caregiver. It
\nshattered the hopes and dreams they shared for a life together. It set them on
\na different path, and yet it never tore them apart.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, being a caregiver is as
\nrewarding as it is challenging.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the day they met, Margot and John
\nhave been a team. Since her diagnosis he has helped her have the best life she
\ncan. Margot worked for 12 years after she was diagnosed. She\u2019d often be tired
\nso John supported her, however he could. He ran the household and when she
\ntravelled for work, John went with her. There were high out-of-pocket expenses
\nand his career certainly was affected. John often says it\u2019s like switching over
\nto \u201calternate programming.\u201d It\u2019s not what he expected and it is still an
\nadventure.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are a pretty good pair, but we wanted
\nto grow our \u2018care team.\u2019 We began a Parkinson\u2019s Support Group, which continues
\nto this day. As a caregiver it\u2019s really important that you have a network of
\npeople you can call upon for practical help and moral support. Sometimes, when
\nMargot isn\u2019t doing well, I just need someone else to talk to so I can find my
\nhope again,\u201d says John.<\/p>\n

Their lives were enriched when they found
\nParkinson Canada. Both Margot and John have served on the Parkinson Canada
\nBoard of Directors.  Drawing on their
\nlived experience, John has been a strong advocate for caregivers, and that\u2019s
\nwhy he is delighted with the release of the new publication, Care Partnering: Managing Parkinson\u2019s
\nDisease Together, <\/em>a book made possible through the generous support of
\ndonors across Canada. <\/p>\n

This practical, insightful book is an
\ninvaluable resource. It delivers supportive, accurate information to
\ncaregivers, and references to other resources that are a big help when
\nnavigating a Parkinson\u2019s journey. John sincerely wishes there was something like
\nit back when Margot was first diagnosed. <\/p>\n

Life as a caregiver can be gratifying, and
\nit\u2019s very important to take care of you, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m lucky. Margot is very supportive and
\nmakes sure I have a life outside caregiving. In the summer I sail with our daughter.
\nI also love photography and music\u2014even if I spend just five minutes a day
\nplaying guitar or ukulele I find it improves my mindset.\u201d<\/p>\n

John knows every day is a gift, and with
\nit comes new research, new treatments and therapies that are making life better
\nfor people living with Parkinson\u2019s. Donor generosity helps Parkinson Canada

\nto switch to \u201calternate programming.\u201d<\/p>\n
