Parkinson\u2019s is the fastest growing neurological disease in the world. No matter at what age a person is diagnosed, receiving the news that you have Parkinson\u2019s is frightening and life-changing. The average wait time to see a specialist for diagnosis of Parkinson\u2019s in Canada is 11 months<\/span> and in some regions the wait is 2+ years. Here is the story of uncertainly and discovery of one of the 100,000 Canadians living with Parkinson\u2019s today. No two people experience Parkinson\u2019s the same way and early and accurate diagnosis are critical for effective treatment and to maintain quality of life. <\/p>\n

Roberta
\nWilson-Garrett<\/strong> first noticed a tingling in one arm and thought little of it. The
\ntingling didn\u2019t get better and in fact, got worse and became a tremor. Her
\nfamily doctor referred her to a neurologist. She waited six stressful months<\/strong> to see him, not knowing what was wrong and
\nwhether or not she could be helped.  <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s
\ncertainly not because physicians don\u2019t want to see people but the problem is we
\njust don\u2019t have enough physicians and this is particularly problematic in
\nParkinson\u2019s because the condition gets more and more complex and more difficult
\nto treat as time goes on,\u201d says Dr.
\nSilke Cresswell-Appel<\/strong>, Associate
\nProfessor for Medicine\/Neurology at the University of British Columbia (UBC)
\nand a member of Parkinson Canada\u2019s Scientific Advisory Council.<\/p>\n

Roberta spent hours on the internet trying to
\nfind answers on her own. At her appointment, the neurologist told her not to worry\u2014it
\nwasn\u2019t Parkinson\u2019s. <\/p>\n

Shortly after, Roberta developed a tremor in
\nher jaw and started having trouble swallowing. She went into panic mode,
\ndesperate for answers\u2014and a diagnosis. Her new neurologist diagnosed her with
\nParkinson\u2019s and so began her treatment. She also attended a full-day Parkinson Canada<\/strong> workshop, where she
\nlearned about getting a referral to a Movement Disorders Clinic\u2014something she didn\u2019t
\nknow existed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter everything I\u2019d been through, I had no
\nreal expectations. As it turned out, reaching out to Parkinson Canada and
\nattending the workshop was the best thing I could have done,\u201d says Roberta. \u201cThankfully
\nI have a support system now. I\u2019m actually very lucky. I know that there are
\nother Canadians who don\u2019t have access to such a clinic because of where they
\nlive in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parkinson
\nCanada<\/strong>
\ncontinues to fund promising research, and to advocate to reduce wait times for
\na diagnosis, and to provide the latest evidence-based resources for the
\nParkinson community. <\/p>\n

Parkinson
\nCanada sponsored a comprehensive new Canadian
\nGuideline for Parkinson Disease, 2nd<\/sup> Edition<\/em>, which provides
\npractical guidance for physicians, allied health professionals, people with
\nParkinson\u2019s and families on Parkinson\u2019s disease management. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn
\naddition to specialist physicians, we need more nurses, and speech,
\noccupational and physical therapists with training in this area, as well as
\nappropriate palliative care for Parkinson patients,\u201d says Dr. David Grimes<\/strong>, lead author of the Guideline<\/em> and Division
\nHead, Neurology, The Ottawa Hospital, University of Ottawa Brain and Mind
\nResearch Institute.<\/p>\n
