I\u2019m living with Parkinson\u2019s. I\u2019m 59 years young, and I never saw it coming. Not that long ago, I was a registered nurse. I was working in home care at a local health agency. I truly loved my job. I loved being able to support others in their time of need. I was living a full life, happily balancing work and family, and even starting to plan for a retirement chock-full of travel\u2014and time enough to finally improve my knitting! Then came my Parkinson\u2019s diagnosis.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

I\u2019d
\nbeen getting slower at work, and was regularly working extended days at my own
\nexpense just to get through all of my tasks. My slowness was becoming a true
\nimpediment. I even started delegating tasks that required finer motor skills,
\nlike taking blood and doing injections and wound care.<\/p>\n

Then
\nI noticed occasional tremors in my left hand. Soon, I was dragging my left leg
\nand the tremors were constant. My balance was affected too. My family doctor, colleagues
\nand I all suspected Parkinson\u2019s. That diagnosis was confirmed in 2016. <\/p>\n

When my
\nneurologist told me, I started to cry. I was so thankful for the box of tissues
\non her desk. I cried for all the things I would never do. I mourned the loss of
\nmy life as an active nurse and the happy retirement I was planning for myself. <\/p>\n

I was
\nable to access Parkinson Canada\u2019s information and referral services. At a time
\nwhen I was filled with uncertainty and fear, Parkinson Canada connected me with
\nresources that helped me cope with my diagnosis and plan for my new life.<\/p>\n

Like many others, I was in shock when I got my diagnosis. There were some very dark days that followed. The darkest was the day I could no longer provide direct care to my patients.<\/p>\n

I felt
\nthat my deficits were making work harder, so I voluntarily underwent an
\nassessment by an occupational therapist. But, when I shared the results with my
\nemployer, I was put on long-term disability. <\/p>\n

My world came crashing down\u2014again.<\/strong><\/h5>\n

In
\nthat moment I couldn\u2019t even begin to imagine what the future would hold.<\/p>\n

What I was truly hoping for was that my workplace could be adapted for me. (See Parkinson Canada\u2019s information sheet called Progression of Parkinson\u2019s Disease<\/a><\/em> and a new resource, At Ease.<\/em> *)<\/p>\n

I
\nfell into oblivion. I tried to maintain connections with my former workplace, a
\nfew select nurses, but it\u2019s hard when they\u2019re busy working and you\u2019re not.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve
\nbecome a volunteer for Parkinson Canada. In fact, I volunteer a lot. And it\u2019s
\nbeen just another source of support for me! <\/p>\n

Volunteering
\nhelps me continue being of service in my community. I use my nursing background
\nworking with support groups, teaching \u2019Parkinson\u2019s
\nDisease 101\u2019<\/em> sessions for newly diagnosed patients and their care partners,
\nand \u2019Parkinson\u2019s Disease 201<\/em>\u2019
\nsessions for nursing students and other health professionals to demystify
\nParkinson\u2019s for them.<\/p>\n

I
\nnever imagined I\u2019d have Parkinson\u2019s, but the fact is, I\u2019m really not so
\nspecial. <\/p>\n

Right
\nnow, more than 25 Canadians are diagnosed every single day\u2014and in the next ten
\nyears or so, it\u2019s predicted that number will double. That means
\nParkinson\u2019s is likely to affect each of us one way or another\u2014every Canadian
\nfamily will know someone with this disease. \n<\/p>\n

That\u2019s
\nwhy research is so vitally important right now. <\/p>\n

Through
\nthe Parkinson Canada Research Program, Canada\u2019s best and brightest scientists
\ncan develop new medications and treatments that will improve the quality of
\nlife for people like me living with Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n

 And I\u2019m certain that one day, research will
\nunlock the key to cure this disease. <\/p>\n
