2010\u00a0 marks Parkinson Society Canada\u2019s 45th<\/sup> year of supporting Canadians with Parkinson\u2019s. Take a look at some of the milestones we achieved as the organization evolved.<\/p>\n

\"Supporting<\/a><\/p>\n

1965<\/strong>
\nCanadian Parkinson\u2019s Disease Association \/ Association Canadienne du Parkinson is incorporated with a mandate of research, education and services. Directors attending the first meeting include the mayor of Toronto, Charles Mortimer Q.C., Dr. Ronald Tasker and Dr. Andr\u00e9 Barbeau, the internationally recognized neurologist who initiated research, in 1960, that demonstrated Parkinson\u2019s resulted from a dopamine deficit.<\/p>\n

1966<\/strong>
\nGrassroots groups form in Victoria, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal.<\/p>\n

1969
\n<\/strong>B.C. Parkinson\u2019s Disease Association is incorporated, sharing a board of directors with the Vancouver Neurological Centre until 1984.\u00a0 (It becomes the Parkinson Society British Columbia, September 14, 2002.)<\/p>\n

1971<\/strong>
\nThe organization is renamed The Parkinson Foundation of Canada \/ La Fondation Parkinson du Canada.<\/p>\n

1972<\/strong>
\nThe Saskatchewan Parkinson\u2019s Disease Foundation registers as a charity.<\/p>\n

1973<\/strong>
\nThe Parkinson\u2019s Society of Alberta is incorporated.<\/p>\n

1977
\n<\/strong>The first chapter is organized in Manitoba.<\/p>\n

1979
\n<\/strong>The Parkinson\u2019s Disease Society of Ottawa-Carleton (Ontario) is incorporated. (It becomes Parkinson Society Ottawa in 2002.)<\/p>\n

1980
\n<\/strong>Volunteers form and run the London, Ontario Parkinson\u2019s Support group.<\/p>\n

1981
\n<\/strong>The National Research Program is launched with the creation of the organization\u2019s first Scientific Advisory Board.<\/p>\n

Parkinson Foundation of Canada awards its first research grant, $150,000, to Dr. Clement Young of Toronto Western Hospital\/University of Toronto.<\/p>\n

1983<\/strong>
\nParkinson\u2019s Disease Society of Nova Scotia is established. (It becomes Parkinson Society Canada \u2013 Maritime Region in 1999.)<\/p>\n

1984
\n<\/strong>At the launch of the first Parkinson Awareness Week in Canada, Honorary Chairman Murray Koffler salutes the Foundation and urges people with Parkinson\u2019s to \u201ctell it like it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. James Parkinson tulip bulbs are available for the first time in Canada in the Ottawa area. 10,000 bulbs are sold.<\/p>\n

1985<\/strong>
\nDr. Andr\u00e9 Barbeau merges the Quebec Parkinson Chapter with the Parkinson Foundation of Canada and pleads for volunteer solidarity.<\/p>\n

1986<\/strong>
\nVictoria Epilepsy and Parkinson\u2019s Centre (British Columbia) incorporates.<\/p>\n

1987<\/strong>
\nA Newfoundland and Labrador support group is established.<\/p>\n

1988<\/strong>
\nThe first annual sale of James Parkinson tulip bulbs across Canada results in the sale of close to 20,000 bulbs.<\/p>\n

1989<\/strong>
\nThe Parkinson Society of Fredericton (New Brunswick) receives its charter.<\/p>\n

The Saint John (New Brunswick) Chapter co-hosts Parkinson Foundation of Canada\u2019s Annual General Meeting and Conference in Saint John, establishing a model for the Foundation\u2019s travelling AGM and conference.<\/p>\n

1990<\/strong>
\nSeven members of the Toronto (Ontario) Chapter hold the first SuperWalk.<\/p>\n

The first annual Blue Jays Pitch In for Parkinson\u2019s baseball game takes place. Pitcher John Cerutti tapes a 30-second public service announcement.<\/p>\n

1993<\/strong>
\nOne of the first Parkinson Foundation of Canada fellowships is awarded to Dr. Pierre Blanchet.<\/p>\n

1994<\/strong>
\nSales of James Parkinson tulip bulbs across Canada reach 100,000 (up from 20,000 in 1988).<\/p>\n

Dr. A. Jon Stoessel receives a two-year operating grant to study \u201cMechanisms underlying complications of dopaminergic therapy in PD.\u201d<\/p>\n

1996<\/strong>
\nParkinson Foundation of Canada supports the development and validation of the first North American rating scale to measure quality of life in Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n

2000<\/strong>
\nSuperWalk for Parkinson\u2019s celebrates its 10th Anniversary with 38 walks across Canada, raising $641,191.<\/p>\n

2001<\/strong>
\nThe organization is renamed Parkinson Society Canada\/Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Parkinson Canada. A new logo is introduced and the mission statement is revised.<\/p>\n

A National Agreement among Canadian Parkinson\u2019s organizations is signed by every Canadian organization representing Canadians living with Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n

The National Information and Referral Centre opens.<\/p>\n

2002<\/strong>
\nThe Donald Calne Lectureship is created to provide Canada\u2019s Parkinson and medical communities with access to some of the world\u2019s foremost experts on Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n

In two years, SuperWalk doubles its revenue to $1,266,574.<\/p>\n

2003<\/strong>
\nParkinson Society Canada works with Health Canada to produce a report, Parkinson\u2019s Disease: Social and Economic Impact, which for the first time reveals economic statistics about Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n

2004<\/strong>
\nParkinson Society Canada hosts the 8th International World Parkinson Day, bringing together all the stakeholder groups in the Parkinson\u2019s community.<\/p>\n

At the annual conference of the College of Family Physicians, Parkinson Society Canada provides family physicians with the newly-developed Family Physician Information and Resource Kit.<\/p>\n

SuperWalk reaches new heights \u2013 74 walks raising almost $1.7 million.<\/p>\n

2005<\/strong>
\nParkinson Society Canada celebrates its 40th anniversary<\/p>\n

2006<\/strong>
\nOver 70 Canadian delegates attend the first World Parkinson Congress in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

Parkinson Report appears in the Globe and Mail.<\/p>\n

2007<\/strong>
\nParkinson Society Canada launches the new website to coincide with Parkinson Awareness Month in April.<\/p>\n

SuperWalk breaks the $2.1 million mark, with over 12,000 walkers participating in 80 walks across Canada.<\/p>\n

Parkinson Society Canada\u2019s National Research Program invests $1.1 million in Parkinson\u2019s research.<\/p>\n

Parkinson Society Canada helps launch the Parkinson\u2019s Research Alliance, a group of 50 of Canada\u2019s leading researchers and clinicians and Parkinson Society Canada, who share ways to collaborate, promote and advocate for excellence in clinical care and research in Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n

Parkinson Society Canada is instrumental in getting the Neurological Health Charities Coalition off the ground.<\/p>\n

\nThe federal government announces $15 million in research funding for the first-ever national study on the prevalence and impact of neurological diseases in Canada.<\/p>\n
